A reign of terror shocked the United States during the 1970s. More and more women students suddenly and inexplicably vanished. During a frantic search for the serial murderer, investigators could not seem to find a link to the perpetrator. The striking similarities of the victims indicated to only one mastermind was behind this scheme. However, when he was caught, America learned that not every serial killer fits the profile. The Walt Disney Corportation When I think of The Walt Disney Company I think of fun amusement parks, Mickey Mouse, and entertaining childern’s movies. Disney has a very focused plan to do their part in the environment as shown in the chart below. They participate in hundreds of community events, showing they care about the public. Teachers have been effective in helping the children to achieve their goals and the objectives in life. They have played a pivotal role in providing quality education to the children. Besides this, the children shall grow to be responsible members of the society, and work towards the general good The teachers have played an important role in assisting the children to learn about teamwork and able to attain the common objectives. Thus, the teachers have been instrumental in bringing fairness and establishing democracy in Kazakhstan. These factors are a source of satisfaction to the teachers, and shall provide motivation to excel in their job role. Working with Children Each of the teachers stated that they liked to work with the children. The most common question asked was pertaining to the most satisfaction aspect in being a teacher. Many teachers mentioned that they felt a deep sense of love for their profession, and its positive impact on the lives of young individuals. According to the (Cockburn, 2000; Lortie, 1975; Nias, 1989), job satisfaction of being able to contribute substantially to the success of a young individual is one of the essential attributes that has lead to the job satisfaction level of the teachers regardless of the country or region in which the teacher operates. As such, there are emotional rewards in being a teacher. Developing informal relationships with the young individuals and working with them in their personal growth has been one of the primary responsibilities in being a teacher. Besides this, the teachers help identify the discrepancies existing within the individual, thereby, leading in the personal growth of the teachers. The teacher helps to identify the strengths and the weaknesses of the students, thereby, leading the students to further development. In the context of Kazakhstan, teachers have been one of the pillars of the society and have made substantial contributions towards it being a democratic country. This has been explained in detail in the following part of the study. Contribution Towards the Society An essential aspect of the job role of teachers working in Kazakhstan is the ability to contribute substantially in the lives of young people. As such, this has been major satisfying factor for the teachers working in this country. Teachers in the country have been striving hard in making difference to the lives of the students. As such, it can be said that they have been positively contributing to the building of the society. This helps the teachers to a take a pro- active role in building the nation. Several acknowledge this fact, along with the negative aspects of a teachers job. Teachers have also emphasized on the growing lack of respect associated with the job of a teacher. As per the present study, teachers have a massive role to play in a developing country, given the stagnant economic and the financial condition of the country. According to the teachers, they can play an important role in turning Kazakhstan into a more economic as well as a democratic country. In this regard , it can be said that this shall help Kazakhstan, since it has traditionally struggled in the context of the economic as well as the democratic development of the country. As such, there is a sense of responsibility as well as pride associated with a teachers job. Facilitating collaboration Developing better working relationships with colleagues shall have a positive impact on the job of a teacher. Teachers who are critical of their fellow colleagues develop feelings of dissatisfaction in the workplace. As such, this shall lead to feelings of discontent in the workplace. In the workplace, colleagues are seen as friends who offer psychological and emotional support. Lack of such support system can lead to the feelings of job satisfaction among the workers in the workplace (Cockburn, 2000; Schwarzer Greenglass, 1999). As such, such factors can lead to a negative perception among the workers in the workplace. Professional Growth Teachers who taught in the secondary school stated that emotional as well as intellectual stimulation in their job role as a teacher. They felt that the job satisfaction of teacher have a positive influence on their professional growth as a teacher. Thus, the teachers have to find excitement as well as stimulation in their job role to find growth as professionals. Factors of Dissatisfaction The past researchers in their research studies have stated the sources of dissatisfaction. (Dinham Scott, 1998, 2000; Thompson, McNamara Hoyle, 1997; van den Berg, 2002). mentioned that these factors included- student failure and lack of respect from the society. Besides this, restrictions in the workplace as well as lack of congenial relationships in the workplace shall have an impact on the operational policies of the business entity. In Western Kazakhstan, there are certain factors that shall have an impact on the decreasing job satisfaction levels in the organization. These include the lower remuneration, decreasing autonomy and the centralization of the education system. As such, the following factors are explained in detail Salary The most essential attribute that shall have an impact on the job satisfaction levels of teachers is the level of pay offered by schools as well as educational institutions In contrast to the Herzbergs theory, the salary is a major motivating factors affecting the morale of the teachers in Kazakshastan. In this regard, it can be said that the salary of the teachers has been increasing every year. Many teachers believe that the job assessment procedures used is not fair. The Life of Ludwig Van Beethoven The rise of Ludwig van Beethoven into the ranks of history's greatest composers was paralleled by and in some ways a consequence of his own personal tragedy and despair. Beginning in the late 1790's, the increasing buzzing and humming in his ears sent Beethoven into a panic, searching for a cure from doctor to doctor. By October 1802 he had written the Heiligenstadt Testament confessing the certainty of his growing deafness, his consequent despair, and suicidal considerations. Yet, despite the personal tragedy caused by the "infirmity in the one sense which ought to be more perfect in [him] than in others, a sense which [he] once possessed in the highest perfection, a perfection such as few in [his] profession enjoy," it also served as a motivating force in that it challenged him to try and conquer the fate that was handed him. He would not surrender to that "jealous demon, my wretched health" before proving to himself and the world the extent of his skill. Thus, faced with su!ch great impending loss, Beethoven, keeping faith in his art and ability, states in his Heiligenstadt Testament a promise of his greatness yet to be proven in the development of his heroic style. By about 1800, Beethoven was mastering the Viennese High-Classic style. Although the style had been first perfected by Mozart, Beethoven did extend it to some degree. He had unprecedently composed sonatas for the cello which in combination with the piano opened the era of the Classic-Romantic cello sonata. In addition, his sonatas for violin and piano became the cornerstone of the sonata duo repertory. His experimentation with additions to the standard forms likewise made it apparent that he had reached the limits of the high-Classic style. Having displayed the extended range of his piano writing he was also begining to forge a new voice for the violin. In 1800, Beethoven was additionally combining the sonata form with a full orchestra in his First Symphony, op. 2. Wilfred Owen fought throughout the First World War until the last week when he unfortunately died in combat. He must have seen many people in shock from the horrors and destruction of war and that is why he composed a poem about shell shocked soldiers. He said this about his poems: â€Å"My subject is War and the pity of war† this poem is another example of this. It is apparent that Owen believed that the men are no longer human and that they are in fact called â€Å"these†. Since loosing their sanity he no longer thought that the people he saw were anything he could recognise; â€Å"Who are these?† He was obviously shocked by what he had observed. He used the word â€Å"twilight† to set an atmosphere for the rest of the poem. It shows what condition the soldiers were kept in because it was a dark area; moreover it gives the whole place a spooky and chilling aura. Owen described the physical features of the shell shocked soldiers at the beginning poem in a cruel approach. â€Å"Drooping tongues† shows the reader a visual image of a motionless man who could not control his body which meant that his tongue would fall out his mouth. Owen goes on describing the victims; â€Å"jaws that slob their relish† the reader can imagine men with their mouth’s open drooling non stop, almost as if their souls have left only to leave a body to fester. These soldiers must have looked repulsive for Owen to describe a human in this manner. It is obvious that Owen was confused by what he had seen, â€Å"Baring teeth that leer like skulls’ teeth wicked†. He could not explain in a definite sentence how these soldiers became what they were; instead he used language effects like alliteration to establish how the shell shocked soldiers behaved. â€Å"Stroke on stroke of pain† is a sibilance which slowed down the poem. It also gives a harsh sound to signify the non-stop artillery which happened in battle. The writer is telling the reader that one cannot imagine what these people were feeling. â€Å"lungs loved laughter† causes a sound of calm slurring to illustrate the groans of the mental as someone passed through them. It is a very affective approach in producing an image of motionless corpses groaning with madness. This quotation further emphasises the loss of thinking because they once enjoyed their lives only to be desecrated from war. The alliteration of â€Å"m† is used twice in â€Å"Mental Cases†: â€Å"memory†¦murders† and â€Å"multitudinous murders†. The sound which this affect produced was a murmuring noise, perhaps making the reader think that Owen was contemplating something like the beginning of a finished war. He used murders because their souls had gone and were now insane. With the quotation â€Å"heads wear this hilarious, hideous† the sound which is created from it when read out loud is one of panting and gasping. This might symbolise the noise of the shell shocked men, or even Owen was making a flashback of war on the front line with the image of a gas attack and soldiers trying to get air in their lungs. There is also an oxymoron in the sentence which shows that he was confused about why the men were in that current state of health. The most significant quotation which really makes the reader imagine what Owen would have seen is†Awful falseness of set-smiling corpses†. This image makes the reader think deeply about how much the shell shocked victims were disturbed by the war. There are many words and expressions in this poem which were chosen to make sound and also to put an image into the mind of the reader. Often these words make the flashback of the battlefield in which the men became shell shocked from. The phrase â€Å"batter of guns shatter† is an internal rhyme that gives a machine gun fire sound showing pain to the reader. The whole quotation of â€Å"Batter of guns and shatter of flying muscles† gives a sound of war description. It also portrays a very graphic incident of a person that was blown to pieces. It becomes apparent that in the second stanza that Owen is trying to work out why these men had become mentally unstable. In line fifteen he refers back to the thinking of the mental by saying; â€Å"Always they must see things and hear them†. The vital word in this sentence is â€Å"must† it shows that because of their state he thought that they always get shocked by the thought of war. The poet displays his anger in the poem; â€Å"Carnage incomparable, and human squander†. He detested the killing of lives and that included people who were no longer rational. Owen felt that if war never occurred the men â€Å"that had loved laughter† would had been healthy and young. In the last line of the second stanza he came to the conclusion of what happened to the men he had seen; â€Å"Rucked too thick for these men’s extrication†. Owen thought that the problems had gone too far, such as seeing many deaths, for the men to escape from it. The poet knew that these shell shocked men were tortured as every minute went by, â€Å"still their eyeballs shrink tormented†. In â€Å"twilight† the men could cope because there were no flashes of light to distress them, the light might have symbolised the artillery and this would have meant that they did not want to go to war ever again; â€Å"Sunlight seems a blood-smear†¦.Dawn breaks open like a wound that bleeds afresh.† The light symbolises the revisit of war for the shell shocked soldiers. Throughout the poem there are dashes in the poem such as â€Å"-These are men whose minds the Dead have ravished.† Each one of these sentences was written in a slightly different style to the rest of the poem; as if Owen was being shown round a ward full of victims of war by a doctor. In line twenty seven the poem says â€Å"Snatching after us who smote them brother†. Owen wrote this because he thought that the mad people were blaming the living (sane) for what had happened to them. In the last line it says, â€Å"Pawing us who dealt them war and madness.† This excerpt could have many meanings such as the shell shocked victims wanting revenge for those who made them turn insane. Further more, Owen is emphasising the pompous leaders as if they were the people inspecting the hospital realising what they had done. Of course, they had no idea of what â€Å"hellish† orders they â€Å"dealt† to those who fought in The Great War because they were not at th e front line. The whole idea of seeing mental people meant that Owen could not describe the situation in plain English, everything is described metaphorically. The whole impression of the mental people was that they were in a nightmare (Surreal) which they had not yet awaken from. He included the horror, pity and after effects of war to show the reader how â€Å"helpless† men could no longer cope with â€Å"Carnage incomparable† which meant that, in the end, they just broke down.

Donner Company Essays Donner Company Paper Donner Company Paper The company has specialized in making circuit boards for experimental devices and for pilot production runs. The basic work process can be divided into three important stages preparation, image transfer and fabrication. The companys president Edward Plumper believes that the company is more adept than its competitors at anticipating and resolving problems inherent in new designs and prototype production techniques due to highly skillful employees with substantial experience that the company has employed. It supplies the schoolmarm over bare copper (SMOOCH) boards under the made-to-order setup, resulting in high variety but low volume and the company charging a premium on its boards. However, this competitive edge has been compromised due to problems being faced in terms of productivity (caused bottlenecks, shifting bottlenecks and improper utilization of labor), quality of the product being manufactured (high rate of product return has been a major problem), and problems associated with the delivery of the final order (most of the shipments are dispatched towards the end of the month). These problems have begun to hamper the overall performance of the firm, and the management has started evaluating the companys position and different strategic policies to overcome those problems. Process Flower process comprises of 3 distinct stages: Preparation of image, Image transfer on the laminate panel and Fabrication into desired profile (size and shape). At the end of the fabrication stage, the circuit boards are inspected, checked and packed, and stored for dispatch in racks of 20 panels. Although some operations are modified for several orders each week depending on customer requirements, a typical work cycle is shown below. Donned had invested $80,000 in buying a technologically advanced CNN machine to perform the drilling and router functions. These processes can also be performed annually, hence, it becomes extremely important to decide when to use the machine and when to perform the action manually. During the drilling step of Image Transfer stage, the standard process involves the use of either automated CNN Drill or Manual drill to complete this step. Both these drills differ in terms of their setup and run times. For the profiling step of Fabrication, either Punch Press or automated CNN Router can be deployed for the process depending on the number of circuit boards in the order. We have done the breakable point analysis to decide the objective criteria for the use of the drills as well as profilers. For orders above 6 units, the use of CNN drill will reduce the processing time as compared to manual drilling. This decision will prove economical for Donned both in terms of costs and processing times. However, we loosely analyze Exhibit 2 (mentioned in the case), to calculate the implied utilization of the CNN machine for drilling. It is very important to understand the true capacity of any process in order to prevent bottlenecks and enable uniform distribution of work load across stages. If we assume that the maximum number of circuit boards that the photocopies area can accommodate is only 50, Donned should ensure that no more than 50 units reach it from the drilling stage. Orders with more than 50 units will result in creation of a bottleneck at the Photocopies stage and the efficiency of the entire manufacturing process stands to be compromised because of the pile up of the work. Because of the existence of multiple steps during this stage (with separate set up and run times), it is critical to analyses each step in detail to identify the creation of bottleneck. This is creating inconsistency in identifying bottle neck in the process. Productivity It is difficult to evaluate the shop productivity precisely, the production bottleneck shifted daily from one operation to another resulting from differences in order size, from orders bypassing some operations , due the differences in circuit designs and the four-day rush orders (3 such orders per week). Thus, a number of machines were idle more often than expected (they ran at low capacity), pointing to process design inefficiency. Some of the major issues identified are: Time spend in reworking parts that failed inspection or were returned was not included The time squired for moving the boards between operations was also not reflected in the cycle time this resulted from the current layout of the operations in the plant Due to huge uncertainty, it is difficult to predict productivity precisely. Several machines were idle more often than expected and the time schedule did not include time spent reworking parts which failed inspection and returned by customers. The Job methods used for production have a scope of improvement and time standards are not feasible for any Job on the shop. The machining operations are kept isolated and separate from etching, plating and imaging. This is because the plating and etching processes release acid vapors, which may lead to corrosion of machine tools. Similarly, the machining operations create dust and affect the other processes. Due to such isolation, time taken between these processes/ stages is high. The operation is sequential in nature. However, for drilling operations, the management hasnt done a breakable analysis to choose between manual labor or to use the CNN machine for the same purpose. No effective Job improvements and constant shifting of workers from Job to Job and other immediate problems. Raw materials are currently simmered for fulfilling expedited orders. This may lead to an order remaining as a Work in Progress (WIPE) order, in the firms manufacturing stream for longer duration than necessary. This is further delayed as it requires another shipment that is now consumed by rush orders. Recommendations: The distance between the Machining and Plating divisions should be minimized as a lot of in-process time goes in between. However, in order to ensure that the other processes are not affected by acid vapors and dust, physical barriers such as partitions or vapor resistant screens can be used. This will serve the purpose, and at the same time will reduce the time spent in between. Donned Company should focus on completing small orders for Smocks. This will help enhance productivity gains, optimum labor utilization and improved quality assurance as the firm possesses both the experience and confidence to assure a high degree of success. Small orders do not require frequent changes in design and hence can thoroughly reduce the Work in Progress. Focusing on only small-volume orders would require the firm to increase their raw material inventory levels and well-planned and timely acquiring, but would also decrease the inefficiency of the raw material simmering process from hampering the entire process altogether. The idle time of labor can also be reduced as such orders will utilize the high skill-sets of the Donned employees. Moreover, by making such uniform order types will make it much more sustainable for the firm to plan resources and share information. Quality This factor was critical to increase the sales volume and recently the company has faced failures in maintaining the quality standards. Some of the major issues identified are: Customer returns increased from 1% to 3%, nine-tenths of which was because of failure to complete mom of the required operations. Failure to formally define quality from the customers end this resulted in sometimes bad shipments being accepted and the good ones being rejected 7% of the boards were rejected at the pre-shipment inspection stage (as of September), 6% of which were because of incomplete operations and then reworked. Recommendations: No formal inspection standard was available: A standard order with design specifications like tolerance etc. Must be taken from the customer during order placement. These order instructions must be followed unanimously across the production line by different workers. This will reduce the loss of one tenth of boards that had been returned because they were out of tolerance. 6% of 7% boards returned because Donned had missed or failed to complete one or two of the required operations: This is due to lack of information coordination between different workers handling various operations. Currently at Donned, until a Job was shipped, the factory order and blueprint were kept by Flattery who gave them to any worker requiring information. This may lead to loss of vital information among workers regarding the order process. Hence, a structured process flow consisting all operations must be communicated by David Flattery to the four assistant supervisors who spent about 10% of their time instructing the workers. These assistant supervisors must ensure that this process flow is maintained and all operations are performed. The inspection at the last stage must ensure all the specifications mentioned by the customer in the order manual are satisfied. Delivery The company promised to deliver boards order within 3 weeks and orders greater than 1000 circuit boards within 5 weeks of placing the order. But the orders were being delayed by more than a week because of some of the issues identified low: The current shipping policy of the company emphasized on clearing all the work out of the shop prior to the end of each month and thus the shipments were mostly done in the second half of each month No inventory was kept by the company, thus for each new order that was logged in searching for the raw material took 2 days and procurement of the same took 4 days.
